Helping LASH members get to medical school.

The LASH Future Physician Scholarship was created by alumni of the Latinx Association for Science and Health (LASH) to help our current members and alumni reach medical school. The medical school application process is long, and those costs should not decide who gets to become a doctor. This scholarship covers the application fees so that money is one less obstacle for a LASH student headed into medicine.

Why it was created

Medical school is one of the most expensive paths a student can take, and the application process alone can cost more than many families can spare. We built this scholarship to remove that early barrier and to give back to the organization that gave us mentorship, friendships, and a community while we were at Baylor. A few reasons this matters to us:

  • Application costs stop qualified students from ever applying. We want financial need to stay out of that decision.
  • Latino and Hispanic physicians make up only around 7% of the doctors in the country.
  • The median debt for medical students graduating in 2025 was roughly $215,000.
  • This is how we invest in the next physicians coming out of LASH, doctors who will serve Texas communities and beyond.

What it covers

The scholarship fully funds the cost of both the primary and secondary applications to Texas medical schools for one recipient, covering both MD and DO programs. This is a reimbursement-based scholarship. The recipient pays their application fees and is then reimbursed, which keeps the funds tied directly to their applications.

Who it's for

This scholarship is open to current and graduated Baylor LASH members who are applying to medical school. It is need-based and intended for a student in strong academic standing who we believe will be a competitive applicant with admissions committees. To be eligible, you should be:

  • A current or former Baylor LASH member.
  • Applying to all MD and DO medical schools in Texas.
  • Able to show financial need.
  • In good academic standing.

You must have already submitted your TMDSAS primary application before you apply.

What you'll need to apply

The application is long by design, as it mirrors the medical school primary application. We recommend drafting your written responses in a separate document and moving them over once everything is ready, so nothing gets lost. You will be asked for:

  • Your name and email.
  • Your submitted TMDSAS primary application.
  • A photo of your highest official MCAT score report. If you took the MCAT more than once, you will list your other scores.
  • Your unofficial academic transcript.
  • Your current FAFSA Submission Summary from studentaid.gov

How recipients are chosen

Every application is read by all five LASH alumni on our scholarship council, and the recipient is chosen by a vote of the full council. The council is:

  • Eduardo Ortiz (Baylor College of Medicine '27)
  • Diego Ortiz (UTMB '30)
  • Angelia Corral (UChicago '29)
  • Juan Castellanos (UTSW '26)
  • Nathan McCoy (TCOM '28)

How to support a future physician

This scholarship is funded entirely by LASH alumni, current healthcare workers, and community members who believe in LASH students pursuing medicine. Our goal is to raise at least $1,700, enough to fully cover one student's applications, and every dollar past that helps us fund more. If you would like to invest in the next generation of doctors coming out of LASH, please email diegortiz777@outlook.com and eddyortiz333@gmail.com
